Working at Westbourne Academy

Carmen Blanch, Head of House & Teacher of Computing Science & IT

Joining Westbourne Academy in 2012 as an NQT,I have had some inspiring, rewarding and memorable moments! I have been able to take some of my students to a regional computing competition, which we won; the National Finals are next ! Enjoying the freedom to develop my own interests and to become part of the wider school community, I ran an introduction to computing course for our local primary feeder schools. This has all been made possible because of the support, encouragement and confidence I have gained since teaching here; this is in no small part thanks to my mentors. I have been able to take my previous skills and knowledge and adapt them for the students I teach here at Westbourne; the children here are quick thinking, enthusiastic and you will see your own skills develop and improve just as surely as those of your classes. Come and teach our students - you will have the support to be the kind of teacher you always aspired to be.

There is never a dull moment at Westbourne Academy! Each day brings its own challenges and enjoyment. The students are lively, enthusiastic and appreciate the care and support that they receive from the staff. There is a real positive energy throughout the school, which creates an extremely friendly atmosphere. Students and staff create a happy environment in which everyone can make the most of their talents and opportunities. Teachers at Westbourne work tirelessly towards a shared goal; encouraging students to have high aspirations and ensuring that each one of them realises their potential. We are always trying to raise standards at Westbourne.  Staff are encouraged to be innovative, take risks in our teaching to ensure that students are engaged, enjoy their learning and take pride in achieving. I have worked at Westbourne since 2009 and as a newly qualified teacher I found the staff caring, supportive and helpful, making it easy to settle into working life at the Academy. I have been given the opportunity to attend several courses as part of a CPD programme suited to my changing professional needs. I have found Westbourne a rewarding school to begin my teaching career and would highly recommend becoming part of this friendly and successful team

I have worked at Westbourne since January 2011 and thoroughly enjoy doing so.

One of the many things that makes Westbourne such a special place to work is the real sense of community spirit that exists, and I was surprised having worked in another school for nine years, how quickly I felt completely settled here and a firm part of that.

Staff are friendly, approachable and most importantly they share a common goal – to make a positive difference to the lives of the young people we work with, both academically and personally. They are always willing to assist with events, trips and performances, appreciating the need to contribute to the wider life and ethos of the school.

Pupils come to Westbourne from a wide range of backgrounds which makes them both interesting and enjoyable to work with - it is extremely rewarding to know that you are playing a small part in shaping their lives during their time here.

This is an exciting time to be a part of Westbourne – the academy is constantly striving to better the lifelong learning experience we offer our students and that, for me, is what this job is all about.
